Monthly Giveaway Winner and some thoughts thrown in

Simply A Musing Blog Contest
Well, I never would have expected that this little monthly contest would have had more than 20 or 30 entries, to be honest. But y’all were terrific in helping me spread the word. So a HUGE “thank you” to all of you — you’re the best!

The first-ever monthly winner is….Stacey at “All Because Two People Fell In Love“! I have already notified her and am waiting to hear back with her mailing address.

Because so many of you were so sweet and helped me out by linking to my contest, I’d like to recognize those of you that did and I encourage everyone to check all these ladies out!

*Our Journey
*Field Stone Cottage

*All The Jones Men
*Win, Win, Win and other stuff
*Bloggy contests
*Toad’s Secret Spot

Okay, now some thoughts. I will never. never. do. this. again. Just kidding. But something different has to be done about selecting the winner next time. I had a seriously un-fun time of cutting and pasting and the adding the above ladies in an extra five times, then printing and cutting out and folding and then having K choose one. Not to mention pulling out all the anonymous people that didn’t leave their email adresses for me. Any ideas? I’m all ears. Shoot ’em down into the comments.

And lastly. I am headed to a wedding tonight, but I wanted to give you a hint atwhat March’s prize will be. Do you like figuring things out?

I like to hang out in the kitchen and I’m fit to be tied if you cook without me. What am I?

Your Tastebuds Will Thank Me.

turkey sandwich recipeThey may not look like much – two little sandwiches on a 10 year old plate, but they taste divine and if you make them, I promise your tastebuds will thank me. I recently made these for our monthly Church Fellowship (two huge pans) and wouldn’t you know it? Not one was left. Everyone commented on how delicious they were and wanted the recipe. What’s so special about them? I can’t really figure that one out myself. You decide – here’s the recipe for you to try, if you are so inclined:

Buttery Sandwich Rolls

~1 lb thinly sliced deli meat (I used turkey, ham and roast beef)
~12 thin slices of medium cheddar cheese (or provolone – something mild)
~1 pkg Hawaiian rolls
~1 stick real salted butter
~1 T garlic powder (or more to taste – we use more)
~1 t poppy seeds

Preheat oven to 250 degrees.
Slice Hawaiian rolls in half and place slice of cheese and slice of meat on each one and arrange in a 13 x 9 pan. In a small bowl, melt butter in microwave and then add garlic and mix. Using a pastry brush, liberally apply the butter mixture over the top of the buns. Sprinkle poppy seeds over buns and then re-apply butter mixture. Bake, uncovered 10-15 minutes, or until cheese is thoroughly melted.

Try not to eat them all. It’s preposterously difficult. You’ll see.

The Post That Wasn’t Meant to Be…

Mistakes are bound to happen. Especially when you’re me. I had good intentions, I really did.jcpenney leaf plate I planned on making a fantastic celebration of my 500th post, but when I went to my draft folder this morning, I realized it was Wednesday and posted my Wordless Wednesday photo as the “big” one. Post number 500. Yesiree, I did.
You might think that a photo of a dead armadillo is all I have to offer you. But you’d be oh so wrong.

I planned on giving you the recipe for these delightful little sandwiches I recently made for our church’s monthly birthday fellowship (they were all the rage and not one was left):turkey cheese hawaiian roll
I was going to show you the fort my kids have made in my dining room…aka the “schoolroom”…if you guessed there’s more playing going on today than learning, you might just be right…sigh.tent city
And I was going to tell you about the bridal shower devotion I did last night, which went well. I had decided a theme was needed…something to “lighten the load” on everyone, since the subject matter was so weighty.samsung front load washer
I guess you’ll just have to wait for these exciting installments to be posted later in the week. Oh, the suspense – I am a feelin’ it.

Don’t forget! Friday is the last day to enter the drawing for my monthly giveaway. You can find the details here. Thanks to everyone who has linked back to my blog with the little birdy – I’m working my way through my emails, but the going has been slow. I do apologize…but I love y’all!

So you say it’s your birthday…na na na na na naaah

My oldest daughter will be eleven on March 4th and I’m having a really tough time deciding what to get her for her birthday. She loves music and art, so the world is my oyster (so to speak) when it comes to finding the right gift. Personally, I want one of these:retro record playerFrom Pedal Cars and Retro Collectibles, an online store owned by Janice and Susan — (the two moms that run 5 Minutes for Mom), it’s one of the coolest things I have found. But I can’t get it for her, because honestly? My husband and I would get more use out of it than she would. (Yes, we still use cassette tapes and we even have a large record collection that we are working at getting digitized)

There’s always one of these:apple ipod playerBut I have issues with the whole ipod thing. What if she leaves it in the pocket of her jeans and it gets washed? (It happens, you know) What if she leaves it lying around somewhere (as she’s so prone to doing with everything) and one of the younger kids (or worse, the cat) destroys it? I know, I know…”the Lord hath not given us the spirit of fear”…but at eleven, is she old enough for a $200 gadget? I think not.

I digress…I may have issues deciding which gift to buy, but one thing I know that we will be doing for K’s birthday – it’s become a sort of family tradition – is we will be taking the day off of school and baking together. Baking is a time of great bonding for us and I love teaching her. Though we have thrown many a batch of cake, cookie, or brownie batter away because neither of us were paying attention to who was adding what, we have come up with a fairly simple solution to this problem. We tape a piece of transparency paper over the recipe and then with a marker, we mark off what we’ve already added. That way, no one adds the baking soda twice (not that it has ever happened to us, you understand). The other thing we do is when a recipe calls for, say, half a cup of shortening – we fill the cup up halfway with water and then add the shortening until the water line reaches the cup mark. (And of course we dump out the water before adding the shortening to the recipe!)

So what works for you when it comes to birthdays? And what am I going to get my daughter for hers? Any ideas? Shoot ’em to the comments for me. For more WFMW tips, head over to Rocks in My Dryer.
