Circle Your Wagons and Save the Date…

The June Desserts Recipe Round Up is right around the corner!

The date is June 14th.

Just post your recipe on Mr. Linky on the day of the roundup. If you want to ensure your recipe gets included in the first draft but are concerned you will “forget”, you may add it in the comments here or email it to me at tallgirltexas at gmail dot com and I will do my best to get it on Mr. Linky. You may submit recipes that have already been posted, as long as they fit the category.

Feel free to send links to recipes you have seen on someone else’s blog as well – we are all about getting the goods back out to you, the people. Oh, and for those of us watching our weight – dessert doesn’t have to cause us unneccessary grief — feel free to submit your weight watchers and low-calorie/low-fat recipes too!

My mama told me…

There is something to be said for people who have a green thumb, unfortunately, I am not one of them. I love flowers and plants and shrubs…but I have in intense dislike for all the work that goes along with it. The weeding, the watering, the dirt under your nails…eek.

My mom, however can take a withered thorn and grow it into the most vibrant and beautiful rosebush you’ve ever seen. AND…she does it without ever getting dirt under her nails. And no, she doesn’t wear gloves. (Well, sometimes she does, but any of you who garden knows that doesn’t prevent the dirt from finding its way under your nails.)

She taught me a long time ago (I was just about 6 or 7) that if you scrape your nails across a bar of soap until the soap is under your nails and then you put your gloves on or you just go outside bare-handed, the dirt doesn’t get stuck under there permanently. It washes off with ease. Presto! You can look like a lady again. Simple? Yes. But it has always worked for me. Check out WFMW at Shannon’s for more tips.

Cheating the Scales — UPDATED!!!!

Well, the scales do not lie. I hesitated to even get on them this morning, since this past week was fraught with such emotional turmoil (not to mention eating out at restaurants for a solid three days – I NEVER have learned to make the best decisions when eating out…)

I am down only 1 pound. BUT…I will take it! I was sincerely hoping for three, so I could hit the big “10”, but alas, it was not to be.

I have been trying walking every other day (with the exception of my trip, where I walked not one whit — but sat in a car for 9 hours straight two days in a row), focusing on drinking MORE water, less tea. I have pretty much cut out all sugar except for the sugar in my tea and coffee…Note to self: buy some Stevia today. Funny thing is, I don’t even miss the sugar. Next out is salt (this one will really hurt, as I love my salt…it should be MY picture on the Morton’s salt cannister, not that little girl with the umbrella).

This week, my goal is to continue to make healthy eating choices – I am going to walk every other day if it kills me, and work my way up to 30 minutes of aerobic daily within the next two weeks. Gosh, when I read those goals, I feel like such an underachiever….but I have not been very active since the birth of our third child, so it will be a major accomplishment for me to stick to this!

Good luck to all of my fellow teammates at Tales from the Scales this week – and thanks for your encouragement!

UPDATED TO ADD: I am usually on top of my game when it comes to checking my scales, but in my blurry-eyed haze this morning, I didn’t notice that my 2 year old had MOVED the dial on my scale again (one of her favorite things to do)- so I’ve really lost FOUR more lbs (not one) for a total of ELEVEN gone!!! Woo hoo!!!! Words fail me.

Bloggy Break

I will be taking a little bloggy break for the rest of the week. My aunt is seriously ill and I am driving my aging parents (76 and 87) to see her 8 hours to Lubbock that “one last time”. Ya’ll pray for traveling mercy and a good visit, won’t you?

Have a blessed weekend!

Nest O’ Pests

Yes, it’s that time of year again, folks! The June Bugs are out (don’t you just love those stinky little things?) and pretty soon, the wasps and yellowjackets will be too.

Every summer here in Texas we fight yellow jackets under the eve of our house and barn. They are attracted to the color yellow and sweet aromas (namely, me). Kill one and it releases an attack scent attracting all the other yellow jackets to the dead one (and you). They can sting more than once (and it hurts, believe me). The only way to kill them is to kill the hive.

One way we do it is we go to Wal-mart and buy a large water gun. You fill it nearly full of water then add dish soap. Shake up and shoot. This kills them and soaks the nest so they will not return. It is best to do this when it’s dark or early in the morning, as the yellowjackets are not as active.

Another way we do it is we fill a large pail with soapy water (I have found that Dawn works best for me, I don’t know why) and just drench the hive and yellowjackets with it. They can’t even fly once the soapy water is on them and the hive dies out within 12-24 hours, and the yellowjackets go with it.

FYI – this also works with Wasps as well – I have used this method successfully for years.

For more WFMW tips, head on over to Shannon’s at Rocks in my Dryer. Well, what are you waiting for? Go!

UPDATED TO ADD: Be sure you use LOTS of soap in the water – it needs to be pretty soapy to work quickly…just thought I ought to mention that!

Julianna’s Meme

This meme was given to me by Julianna, who knows how I feel about memes, but tagged me anyway. So…I shall do this JUST for her. It’s an odd one – never done one like this before, so here we go.

The seven deadly sins of Karen:

1. Lust. I admit it. I lust after my husband. Quit clucking your tongue, ladies…if you saw him, you would too.

2. Gluttony. I can literally make myself SICK eating Oreos. One time, when I was pregnant with our first daughter, I ate an ENTIRE package in one day with 2 or 3 glasses of milk to chase ’em down. Hm..no wonder I gained 73 lbs, huh???

3. Greed. This is difficult, because I don’t really consider myself a greedy person, unless of course, you count the fact that I am always coveting “alone time” for myself.

4. Sloth. Laundry. Piles of Laundry. Need I say more?

5. Wrath. I have an intense dislike for yelling and screaming in my household…although it’s usually me doing it…sigh.

6. Envy. I envy people who have time for themselves and no laundry piles on their beds.

7. Pride. I have to give all the glory and honor to God for the good things in my life – my husband, my kids…it’s hard for me to be proud of these things, because anything I’ve ever accomplished would not have been possible without God the Creator sustaining and enabling me.

I am supposed to tag 7 people, but I don’t even KNOW 7 people that would DO this meme!
1. Rachel @ Memories of Mine to Thine
2. Lisa @ Welcome to the Zoo
3. Kim @ Our Journey
4. Melissa @ Little Wool Gatherings
5. Jen @Girl Gone Wild
